Shield Boxes for the Zion Reactor Vessel

Fabrication by PD of the Zion Unit-2 Reactor Vessel (RV) Nozzle shielding boxes is nearing completion. Final QC inspection of these very large boxes began today, with plans for shipping them to site shortly. Once these ship, PD will have supplied over a half-million pounds of shipping boxes and shield plates for the RV, RVI, and Steam Generators. Previously supplied were boxes for the Beltline RV pieces and shield rings for Steam Generator Lower Assemblies (SGLA).

Although PlantDecommissioning is currently known for our Zion and Humboldt Bay RVI/RV equipment, we also have plenty of experience supporting active NPP's with outage and emergent work. This allows us to provide a professional "do what it takes" mentality to our decommissioning support.

Dry Fuel Storage Support

The PlantDecommissioning group (PD) shipped several "Guides" for use during loading of dry fuel canisters at McGuire, Catawba, and Kewaunee. These Guides are placed above the cell in the dry fuel storage can and "funnel in" the FA. It reduces the risk of a loose piece (such as grid strap) on the Fuel Assembly catching on the top of the cell. Working with M IV Services, this latest Guide incorporates lessons learned from loading 61 "cans" at Zion.

The first Guide was made on an urgent basis and supplied to Zion on 12/24/2013 (Christmas Eve). Since it was a few days ahead of schedule, it was test fit and the crew had some suggestions. The next design was delivered at 6 a.m., December 26. This was used that day on the first Zion can. On January 16, a special "tight corner" guide was delivered. Now at the fourth generation design, these Guides are soon becoming a standard item in dry fuel loading.

Milestones at Zion Decommissioning

Today, March 6, 2015, the final dry storage can was placed on the pad in the Zion ISFSI. All 65 canisters are now in the ISFSI. This can was the fourth can containing GTCC pieces of the Zion reactors. PlantDecommissioning.com has supported the GTCC campaign since providing equipment in 2011 and on-site staffing in 2013.

Also, yesterday (3/5/2015), the Unit-2 reactor vessel was cut free of all piping. Segmentation of the RV is about to start. PlantD is supporting this by supplying shielded steel boxes for packing the cut RV sections. With the convenience of a PlantD manufacturing and fabrication facility 15 miles from the site, the Zion decommissioning project saves time and cost to transport these heavy boxes.
